Unexplained Infertility | Exeter

The diagnosis of ‘unexplained infertility’ can create feelings of helplessness and frustration in couples who long to become parents as there is no answer or apparent ‘fix’.   Yet, in many ways, this diagnosis is good news – there is no physical reason why you may not become parents.  You are not infertile, you just have not conceived yet.

The even better news is that there are many simple things which can help to improve your chances of conception.  For instance, the way we live can have a big effect on the reproductive system of both men and women.   Increasing your fertility outcome is something you can both do for unexplained infertility. You can make sure you and your partner are eating healthily, and eliminate habits that may lower your chances of conceiving.

Stress and anxiety can have a big effect on fertility. Stress hormones affect the hypothalamus and pituitary glands and reproductive organs. In women under stress, the reproductive hormone prolactin is over-produced and this can interfere with ovulation. The hypothalamus stops secreting gonadotrophin hormone, which in turn will affect the release of both the luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. As these hormones stimulate ovulation – fertility is affected.

It is easy to get into a cycle of negative thinking so we work together to bring about positive attitudes and beliefs.  The mind and body are inextricably linked, and we work with you to enable you to imagine and create positive outcomes – from being able to see yourself pregnant to being able to visualize embryos embedding while undergoing egg harvesting or implantation in IVF. (see support for IVF pages)

Hypnotherapy is exceptionally beneficial for unexplained infertility.

Hypnosis affects the hypothalamus—the neural centre at the base of the brain linked to the pituitary gland—and controls the flow of hormones in the body. The hypothalamus is sensitive to stress and acts as a bridge between the emotional and physical, turning emotional messages into physical responses that affect hormone levels.  It allows for hormonal rebalancing.

I help you to let go of the stress you have been holding on to, using specialised relaxation, and breathing techniques.

Hypnotherapy teaches you to let go of any emotional blocks or worries you may have that can create infertility issues – Hypnotherapy can help you identify and process emotional issues that might be interfering with conception.

fear of childbirth - tokophobia

worried if pregnent

Tokophobia is the fear of childbirth and many women suffer in silence

There are two types of Tokophobia:

Fear of giving birth:

Primary Tokophobia
this is a morbid and profound fear of giving birth that leads to a complete avoidance of pregnancy, even if the sufferer would love to have children.
Secondary Tokophobia
this is often due to a previous traumatic giving birth experience or poor birth medical attention, post natal depression or other such upsetting events, which renders the sufferer emotionally unable or unwilling to have more children.

Symptoms of Tokophobia

As with all phobias there are the symptoms of extreme panic when hearing about childbirth, reading about childbirth or indeed anything childbirth related. Even being around a pregnant woman can induce feelings of real panic or disgust. The thought of giving birth and/or the associated pain is terrifying.

This can result in:

  • Avoidance of pregnancy
  • Request for Caesarean birth where there is no medical need
  • Termination of Pregnancy

pregnancy Typical comments from Tokophobia sufferers:

"The truth is that the very thought of having something almost alien-like growing inside me is disgusting”

"It's not too strong to say that the very thought of childbirth disgusts me in a big way."

"It's much more than an anxiety - I am actually physically repulsed by pregnancy and childbirth."

"I even struggle to be around friends when they are pregnant and can't bear to watch or listen to anything about the process of having a baby”

There is a very special form of hypnotherapy called Pure Hypnoanalysis which has helped many thousands of people over the years with anxiety. The aim of Pure Hypnoanalysis is not symptom control or trying to manage the problem, the aim is to resolve it.

Help with the symptoms of menopause | Exeter

The symptoms of perimenopause and menopause can be very distressing and debilitating in a woman’s life.

Woman with vaginismus

Only 10% of women require the common medical treatment for the menopause known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT).  However, HRT is not for everyone and more and more menopausal women are looking to complementary therapies to help.

Symptoms of the menopause

Although menopause is a natural process, some women struggle enormously to deal with problems such as hot flushes, night sweats and lack of sleep - and this has detrimental knock-on effects on mood, on work and on family.

Many women think the only option for them is to go on to HRT but they are unhappy or wary about doing so because of the negative health implications. Hypnotherapy offers a safe, simple and effective alternative.  It is a relaxing, yet powerful treatment, which can help control unwanted feelings, worries or habits.  It is very effective in reducing overall stress and alleviating symptoms.  Stress can make memory loss and difficulty in concentrating worse!

The mind and body are inextricably linked and hypnotherapy harnesses the power of your mind to help significantly with the symptoms.

The early and later stages of menopause can cause various symptoms such as:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Palpitations
  • Insomnia
  • Self esteem issues
  • Joint aches
  • Mood swings
  • Headaches
  • Poor Memory
  • Lack of concentration
